Karaba: My agents were blocked from accessing polling stations

Former Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba told an election petition court that his Jubilee Party agents turned against him in the August 8 election.

He claimed his independent agents, whom he sourced on realising he was not being supported by those sponsored by the party, were blocked from accessing polling stations to monitor voting, counting and tallying of votes.

Mr Karaba, who was giving his testimony during the hearing of his petition before the visiting Kerugoya High Court judge Abigael Musila, alleged the sole purpose of frustrating his agents was meant to create room for manipulation of election results in favour of his opponent Charles Kibiru.

The petitioner alleged the said voter manipulation were rampant in Mwea.

But IEBC lawyer Charles Mwongela blamed Karaba for failing to ensure his agents had letters of appointments and sworn forms of election secrecy as required.

Karaba, however, maintained the Jubilee fraternity appeared it did not want to cooperate with him and did all it could to ensure his agents were intimidated and denied access to the polling stations.

“Even the super-agent appointed by the party to oversee the elections in the county did not want to cooperate with me hence my agents resulted to unorthodox means to obtain some of the elections results from various polling stations," he claimed in court.

Karaba is seeking nullification of the August 8 senatorial election whose forms 34A and 34B were manually transmitted following the entry of Karimi Karubiu into the race a week to the Election Day allegedly resulting in vote manipulation.

The electoral body lawyer said there was no time to include Karubiu in the Kiems system after a court order, leading to manual transmission of the results. Hearing continues this morning.
